Corno means, “horn”. It is an Italian amulet of ancient origin. The stylized horn has evolved from a natural goat or sheep horn to that of a twisted African descent. Most cornos are carved out of red coral, becoming a smooth impression of a horn.

The old European moon goddess, Luna, found all horned animals to be sacred, most likely because the horns pointed toward the moon.

This Italian charm was protection against the “Evil Eye”. The evil eye is believed to harm nursing mothers and their babies, bearing fruit trees, and the sperm of men-generational forces.

The “Corno” piece built for Dennis and Sally has the evolution of the horn amulet. The opening in the vessel is a stylized Moon Goddess with a full moon. The vessel has a feminine composition. The rounded glass object is knapped out of Italian wine bottles melted down at 2000 degrees. The glass circle represents the ominous evil eye or the benign moon goddess, the dichotomy of good and evil.

For some 6000 years, a group of cattle with huge horns played a role in African tribes. One of the oldest and most exciting breed of these cattle is the Watusi. Also known as “Cattle of Kings”, “Ankole Cattle” and “Royal Ox”, this breed originated in East Africa. Cave drawings and other artifacts suggest these cattle played important roles in the tribes lives.

Exceptional cattle with huge horns (12 ft. or more from tip to tip) were only owned by the King and considered to be sacred. They were considered a sign of wealth within the tribe and were seldom slaughtered for meat, except in coming of adulthood ceremonies.

Nature helped develop the character of Watusi in order for survival. The young have to be born quickly and be strong enough to outrun predators within a short time after birth. The breed is highly social and prefer to stay in a group for company and protection. At night, they form a circle with the adults lying on the outside and the calves in the inner circle with their horns out to protect the calves from lions.

Watusi are especially resistant to drought, heat and direct sunlight. Their large horns are also useful in cooling their body temperature by circulating blood to the ends of their horns. A stout heart, health, wealth, and good fortune are also associated with these cattle.

The Venus of Lespugue was found in 1922 by Saint Perrier in the cave of Les Rideaux. The sculpture was originally made out of mammoth ivory, measures 5.75″ high and is dated at 27,000 years old. She represents the Earth and it’s fertility and the continuation of life. She is The Mother Goddess, the universal female principle in its most primitive conception. Upper Paleolithic female figures like this one are found from the Pyrenees mountains to Siberia, indicating that East and West were once united in honoring the Goddess. The vast majority (over 90%) of human images from 30,000 to 5,000 B.C. are female. Women were recognized as the life-givers and sustainers and they were revered as priestesses.
